Speaking at a public gathering, Kilonzo emphasized the importance of increasing forest cover to mitigate the adverse effects of climate change, including erratic weather patterns and prolonged droughts.
“I urge all Machakos residents to use this rainy season wisely by planting trees. This will help in environmental conservation and ensuring a greener future for our county,” said the Deputy Governor.
In addition to tree planting, Kilonzo encouraged residents to harvest and store rainwater to ensure water security during dry periods. He warned against letting rainwater go to waste, noting that water shortages have been a persistent challenge in the region.
“This is the time to make use of our rooftops and storage facilities to collect and store rainwater. Proper harvesting and storage will help us during the dry seasons,” he added.
His remarks come amid ongoing government and environmental organization efforts to promote afforestation and sustainable water management practices in arid and semi-arid areas like Machakos.
Local leaders and environmental activists have lauded the Deputy Governor’s call, urging residents to embrace tree planting and water conservation as a long-term solution to climate-related challenges.
