Machakos Deputy Governor Francis Mwangangi Kilonzo has urged the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) selection panel to ensure transparency and accountability as it embarks on the process of picking the next team to lead the electoral body.
Speaking on Monday morning as the selection exercise kicked off, Mwangangi emphasized the need for an independent commission that will restore public confidence in Kenya’s electoral system.
“Kenyans need a team that is truly independent and accountable to the people. A credible electoral body that will restore public confidence by spearheading free, fair, and verifiable elections where every vote counts is all we need,” he stated.
The Deputy Governor stressed that for the IEBC to regain trust, the selection panel must prioritize integrity and ensure that only the most qualified individuals are appointed. He also warned against external interference, noting that any influence from political quarters could compromise the credibility of the process.
“To make sure this is achieved, they must operate with integrity and choose the best for Kenyans while resisting any external influence that may interfere with the process,” Mwangangi added.
His remarks come at a crucial time when the country is preparing for future elections, with stakeholders calling for electoral reforms to prevent past challenges. The outgoing IEBC team faced criticism over the handling of previous elections, leading to calls for a fresh and impartial commission.
Mwangangi expressed optimism that the panel will deliver a team that will uphold democratic principles and strengthen Kenya’s electoral framework.
