A political storm has erupted in Taita Taveta County following the appointment of Dominic Maingi, the former principal of Masii Boys High School, as the new head of Kenyatta Boys High School in Mwatate.
Wundanyi MP Danson Mwashako has written to the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) objecting to Maingi’s posting, arguing that the position should have been given to a qualified local principal.
Mwashako said the school, which recently bid farewell to longtime principal David Macharia after his retirement, deserved leadership from within the county. According to him, appointing a local educationist would inspire teachers from Taita Taveta and strengthen the community’s sense of ownership of the national institution.
“This appointment sidelines our own talent. We have competent chief principals within Taita Taveta who deserve this chance. Giving the school to a local would not only motivate teachers but also cement the community’s role in supporting Kenyatta Boys,” Mwashako said.
The MP further cautioned that overlooking local stakeholders in such critical appointments risks sowing discontent among residents who have invested in the growth and success of the school over the years.
Mr. Maingi’s appointment has therefore triggered sharp debate in the county, with stakeholders and political leaders expected to weigh in as pressure mounts on the TSC to reconsider its decision.
