Eliud Owalo Resigns as Deputy Chief of Staff After Declaring 2027 Presidential Bid

Eliud Owalo, has resigned from his position as Deputy Chief of Staff in charge of Delivery and Government Efficiency  with immediate effect, hours after declaring his intention to contest for the presidency in the 2027 General Election.

In a statement, Owalo said his continued stay in government had become untenable following his decision to seek the country’s highest office, citing the need to uphold integrity, accountability, and fairness in the political process.

“Following my declaration earlier today that I intend to run for Presidency of the Republic of Kenya in the year 2027, my position as the Deputy Chief of Staff, Delivery and Government Efficiency is no longer tenable,” Owalo said. “I have therefore resigned from the position with immediate effect.”

Owalo’s resignation marks a significant political development within the Kenya Kwanza administration, where he has played a key role in overseeing service delivery and efficiency across government ministries, departments, and agencies. His exit is expected to trigger realignments within the Executive as the race toward the 2027 elections begins to take shape.

A seasoned public servant and political strategist, Owalo has previously served in various senior government roles and has been viewed as a technocrat with growing political ambitions. His decision to step down early is being interpreted by analysts as a strategic move aimed at positioning himself nationally while avoiding conflict of interest concerns associated with holding a powerful government office during an active presidential campaign.

The announcement injects fresh dynamics into the 2027 presidential contest, which is already drawing interest from several political heavyweights. While Owalo has yet to unveil his party vehicle or campaign structure, his declaration and immediate resignation signal a serious and deliberate entry into the race.
Political observers say the coming months will be critical as Owalo begins nationwide engagements, builds alliances, and articulates his policy vision to Kenyans, particularly on governance, economic management, and public sector efficiency—areas closely aligned with his recent government portfolio. His resignation takes effect immediately.
