Francis Mwangangi Kilonzo - Machakos County Deputy Governor has advised Machakos Farmers not to sell their produce to private buyers at give-away prices as this comprises household food security.
Speaking at the Nzewani area in Katangi Ward, Yatta Sub-county, while commissioning water project on Tuesday, Mwangangi cautioned farmers not to sell their farm produce at throwaway prices. Instead, he urged farmers to keep stock for the right time and sell it at better prices.
He said the bumper harvest experienced in most parts of Machakos County is much better compared to other neighbouring ones.
He attributed the bumper yields to the mechanization of agriculture in Machakos County, which included the provision of certified seeds and observing rainfall patterns in the wake of climate change.
He lamented that some farmers had started selling their maize produce below Ksh 100 per 2 Kilograms of tin, and in a short while, they will start buying the same at Ksh 230 or even more.
He alerted residents of Machakos County that buyers who purchase several sacks of maize and beans cheaply now will sell the same cereals at exorbitant prices later.
He therefore called upon the Agriculture Department to convene talks on how to prevent the farmers from exploitation by opportunists who would want to buy their farm produce at low prices.
