WATER AND HEALTH DEPARTMENTS COLLABORATE TO IMPROVE SERVICE DELIVERY

Enough water supply contributes to the reduction of health care costs by protecting the health of staff and preventing hospital-acquired infections. It also contributes to disease prevention and promotes health and well-being, especially for children and mothers.

The Department of Water and that of Health and Sanitation have collaborated to provide quality health care at the Busia County Referral Hospital by providing safe and clean water supply.

Chief Officer for Water, Mr. Kelly Omboko appreciated the progress of the works and the timeliness adding that the project should be completed before 1st May.

“The remaining 5 percent of the works is just to address the leakages and testing the system and once the project is completed there will be enough water for the facility," said Omboko as he assured of a harmonious working between the departments to complement each other in service delivery to Busia residents.
The Busia County Referral Hospital Assistant Medical Superintendent, Dr. Emma Namulala, who chaired the inspection meeting said once the work is completed, it will enhance cleanliness, hand hygiene facilities at points of care and at toilets; and appropriate waste disposal systems.

“Lack of water is a key hindrance to the key services that need to be addressed within the hospital like the functioning of the ICU and the oxygen plant," said Dr Namulala.

She also appreciated the good collaborations with the Department of Water in service delivery adding that through the goodwill from the Water Department some of their needs have already been addressed.
The meeting was also attended by Director of Water, Mr. James Imwene who assured that all the issues raised will be addressed by the department.

The departments of water has erected a 50 cubic meter steel water tank at the facility in addition to the existing water tank to provide enough water to the facility.
