Machakos Wiper Nominated MCA Hellen Ndeti has revealed that there is a need for joint efforts to end stigma surrounding menstruation on girls.
Speaking at St. Mary's Girls school in Machakos Town during the official launch of free sanitary pads by the Machakos County Woman Rep Joyce Kamene Kasimbi, MCA Hellen Ndeti said that period stigma is a major challenge to the school - going Girls, pointing that it majorly affects their education and self esteem.
Ndeti said that out of 10 girls, 3 girls miss school during their menstruation period, hence affecting their education and academic performances.
"A big number of our girls don't go to school during their menstruation period for fear of embarrassment, should they accidentally soil their skirts," revealed MCA Hellen Ndeti
She called on society to join hands in fighting the stigma surrounding menstruation in girls, saying that no, even a single girl should miss school due to fear or having low self-confidence during the menstruation period.
"I call on all leaders and the society at large. Let's stand and support our girls to help them achieve their dreams. Let's rally together to end period stigma in our girls, " said MCA Hellen Ndeti
She encouraged the school-going girls to accept menstruation as a normal part of any girls' development.
Hellen Ndeti congratulated Machakos County Woman Rep Joyce Kamene Kasimbi's initiative of distributing sanitary pads to all school-going girls in the entire Machakos County, saying that the initiative will also enhance education and level up academic performances in Machakos County.
