Youths in Machakos County have been encouraged to form groups and register companies to tap into County Government tenders and other available opportunities. Governor Wavinya Ndeti reaffirmed her administration’s commitment to empowering the youth, ensuring they benefit from the constitutionally mandated 30% provision for Youths, Women, and Persons Living with Disabilities.
During public participation forums focused on the Machakos County Youth Empowerment Act 2022, Governor Ndeti instructed her officials to facilitate the registration of youth groups, each with at least ten members, within the next two weeks across all sub-counties.
Governor Ndeti emphasized that the county budget would be restructured to prioritize youth-related initiatives, addressing the critical issue of youth unemployment. "We must realign our budgets to favor the youth. Positive discrimination is necessary to empower our youths," she stated.
Under the proposed Machakos Youth Service, which will be established through the County Youth Empowerment Act 2022, compulsory training in Agriculture and Computer Studies will be implemented. This is aimed at ensuring the county achieves food security and actively participates in the digital economy.
At the forums in Kalama, Kathiani, and Masii in Mwala, youths voiced their support for the legislation and outlined their needs, including the provision of irrigation pumps, water tanks, and car wash machines.
Deputy Governor Francis Mwangangi criticized Kalama MCA Boniface Maeke for failing to attend the forum and represent his constituents, suggesting that such leaders should be held accountable in the next election.
