Machakos Governor Wavinya Ndeti has called for an immediate end to the increasing wave of student strikes, emphasizing the need for peaceful resolutions and open dialogue. Speaking to the press after attending a church service at Our Lady of Lourdes Cathedral Church in Machakos Town on Sunday, the Governor condemned the destructive actions by students, warning that they were only hurting themselves and their families.
Governor Ndeti highlighted that the destruction of school property places a heavy financial burden on parents, many of whom are already struggling to meet the costs of education. "When students destroy their own facilities, it is their parents who are forced to repair them. This behavior must stop," she said. The Governor added that strikes and violence in schools were counterproductive, as they disrupt learning and waste resources.
The Governor urged schools to foster open communication between students, teachers, and parents to address grievances before they escalate into strikes. She called on school administrations to be more responsive to students' needs while encouraging students to use dialogue as the primary way of airing concerns.
In her remarks, Governor Ndeti also emphasized the crucial role of parents in maintaining discipline. "Parents must take the lead in instilling discipline in their children. The foundation of good behavior starts at home," she stressed.
The Governor's appeal comes in response to a recent surge in student unrest across several schools in the region, with cases of arson and property destruction becoming frequent. Education stakeholders have also been grappling with how to manage the situation, and Governor Ndeti’s call for dialogue aims to provide a sustainable solution to the ongoing crisis.
She concluded by urging the education sector to work closely with law enforcement to ensure schools remain safe and conducive environments for learning.
