Catherine Mutanu, the Machakos Minister for Agriculture, presided over the distribution of fingerlings at Kaumbuthu Dam in Machakos County. This initiative is part of the broader empowerment merchandise launched by Governor Wavinya Ndeti during the G7 Summit, aimed at boosting local economies and food security.
The Department of Agriculture's empowerment program focuses on the distribution of fingerlings to promote fish farming across the county. During the event at Kaumbuthu Dam, Minister Mutanu announced that the department has procured approximately 90,000 fingerlings, consisting of two species: Tilapia and Catfish. These species were selected for their adaptability to the local environment and their popularity among local communities.
The Machakos County Government, through the Department of Agriculture and Water, will distribute these fingerlings to 80 dams strategically located across the county, ensuring that each ward benefits from the initiative. The distribution will enable local farmers to engage in fish farming, providing them with an additional source of income and contributing to food security in the region.
Minister Mutanu highlighted that this program is not just about distributing fingerlings but is part of a larger strategy to empower the people of Machakos. The initiative aims to encourage sustainable agricultural practices, create employment opportunities, and enhance the livelihoods of local communities.
