Last evening, the CEO of the Music Copyright Society of Kenya (MCSK), Dr. Ezekiel Mutua, attended a vibrant album launch event by renowned Kamba artist Biez Kaviru at Signature Mall along Mombasa Road.
Known for his unique Kamba music, Biez, often dubbed the "King of the Banana Island," was joined by industry heavyweights including Mr. Solomon Omboto (Mr. Myogenic), Adviceroi Mundalo, Nicko Arts, Richard Lagat, Ambassador Toby Bisengo, Masekete, Kayeye, Ndeke ya Muthanga, Stephen Kasolo, Rick Bee, Mutisya Maweu among others.
In his address, Biez encouraged fellow Ukambani artists to prioritize unity and avoid controversies that could damage their public image, calling for an end to the recent public disputes among artists in the region.
Dr. Mutua echoed this call for unity and announced MCSK's intention to collaborate with the Kamba Council of Elders and local church leaders to pursue Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) as a means to resolve conflicts and mentor artists toward professionalism. He highlighted the role of artists as role models, urging them to promote peace, inspire hope, and contribute to national development through their influence.
“We are committed to embracing dialogue to foster peace and harmony among the highly talented and influential artists in the region. It is crucial that they channel their talents and status toward positive social impact,” Dr. Mutua remarked.
Additionally, he emphasized the need for copyright compliance, urging event organizers, the hospitality industry, public service vehicles, and media to respect artists' rights by paying for the use of their musical content. MCSK plans to launch a national awareness campaign on copyright compliance to ensure artists receive fair compensation for their work.
The event underscored MCSK’s and industry leaders' commitment to building a cohesive, professional, and sustainable environment for Kamba artists and the broader Kenyan music industry.
