Machakos Agriculture Minister Hon. Catherine Mutanu Urges Farmers to Grow Fruit Trees Amid Climate Training

Machakos County Agriculture Minister Hon. Catherine Mutanu has urged farmers to embrace fruit tree farming as part of climate adaptation and sustainable agriculture.

Speaking during the official weather and climate prediction training held in Machakos Town, Hon. Mutanu emphasized the importance of fruit trees in boosting food security, conserving the environment, and improving livelihoods.

"I urge all farmers in Machakos to take advantage of the upcoming rainy season to plant and nurture fruit trees. These trees not only provide food and income but also help in mitigating the effects of climate change," she said.

The training, sponsored by the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), brought together farmers from various parts of Machakos County. Experts from the meteorology department provided advisories on expected weather patterns and best farming practices.

One of the participants, James Mutiso, a farmer from Mwala, welcomed the initiative, stating, "This training has enlightened us on how to use weather forecasts to plan our farming activities better. We are ready to embrace fruit tree farming as recommended."

Farmers have been encouraged to adopt drought-resistant fruit varieties such as mangoes, oranges, and avocados to ensure productivity even in changing climatic conditions.

The county government, through the agriculture department, has pledged to support farmers with seedlings and technical training to enhance agricultural resilience in the region.
