MCSK Endorses Kisumu City's Bid for UNESCO Creative Cities Network

The Music Copyright Society of Kenya (MCSK) has officially endorsed Kisumu City's bid to join UNESCO’s Creative Cities Network, pledging full support in collaboration with the County Government of Kisumu

In a statement released today, MCSK CEO Dr. Ezekiel Mutua emphasized the society’s commitment to ensuring Kisumu achieved this prestigious global recognition. He highlighted Kisumu’s rich creative heritage, describing it as the citadel of Kenya’s creative economy and home to renowned artists such as Oscar-winning actress Lupita Nyong’o, musician Susanna Owiyo, and veteran actor Oliver Litondo.
"As the umbrella body representing the music industry in Kenya, and with our international networks spanning over 100 reciprocal agreements globally, we will rally support for Kisumu City to clinch this important recognition," said Dr. Mutua, who has been at the forefront of advocating for the growth and protection of Kenya’s creative sector.

Dr. Mutua further praised Kisumu for its deep-rooted artistic culture, stating that the city has played a pivotal role in shaping Kenya’s creative landscape. He noted that under the leadership of Kisumu County, the city has consistently nurtured talent, making it a deserving candidate for UNESCO's recognition. He reaffirmed MCSK’s readiness to leverage its influence both locally and internationally to bolster Kisumu’s chances of securing the prestigious title.

MCSK has had a long-standing collaboration with Kisumu through the county government and sees this endorsement as a natural step in solidifying the city's status as a regional hub for arts and culture. Dr. Mutua affirmed that MCSK will offer all necessary support to enhance Kisumu’s reputation as a leader in the creative economy.

The UNESCO Creative Cities Network recognizes cities that prioritize creativity in their development strategies, fostering cultural and artistic growth. If successful, Kisumu will join a global league of cities renowned for their commitment to creativity and innovation.
