Machakos Hits Top 10 in Maize Production, CECM Mutanu Calls for Non-Political Approach to Food Security

Machakos County has secured a spot among Kenya’s top ten maize-producing counties, ranking sixth nationally with a harvest of 253,281 tonnes in 2025. This notable achievement was announced by Catherine Mutanu, the County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Agriculture, Food Security, and Cooperative Development, during a press briefing on behalf of Governor Wavinya Ndeti.

CECM Mutanu attributed the success to a combination of improved irrigation infrastructure and the adoption of resilient agricultural practices by farmers across the county. She emphasized that this milestone is a reflection of strategic planning and increased support to the agricultural sector.

“This accomplishment is the result of tireless efforts by our farmers and deliberate investments by the county government to boost productivity,” said Mutanu.

She used the opportunity to call for unity among all stakeholders in advancing the food security agenda, cautioning against politicizing an issue that directly affects the well-being of citizens.

“Food security should never be used as a political tool. It is a basic human right, and we must approach it with the seriousness and collaboration it deserves,” she stated.

Mutanu further reaffirmed the county’s commitment to its 2025–2026 Annual Development Plan, which places agriculture at the center of Machakos’ economic transformation.

Looking ahead, the county plans to expand irrigation coverage, support agro-processing ventures, and deepen partnerships with both local and international agricultural stakeholders.

“Our vision is clear — to make Machakos a food-secure, self-reliant county that contributes meaningfully to the national food basket,” she added.

With the maize sector showing positive momentum, Machakos is poised to lead by example in demonstrating how good governance and community collaboration can drive food sustainability in Kenya.
