The political landscape in Machakos County is already taking shape ahead of the 2027 General Election, with renewed interest and early declarations in the senatorial race. The latest to make his intentions clear is Hon. Jackson Kala, who has officially announced that he will be contesting the Machakos County Senatorial seat on a Wiper Democratic Movement ticket.
Speaking during a burial ceremony in Mutituni on Wednesday, Hon. Kala boldly stated that his time to serve the people of Machakos as Senator has come. He reminded residents of his past political journey, highlighting his candidacy during the 2021 senatorial by-election which followed the demise of the late Senator Boniface Kabaka.
“I was the original Wiper candidate in 2021, but for the sake of party unity and strategy, I chose to step down in favour of Hon. Agnes Kavindu. I did that wholeheartedly, but come 2027, it is my turn. I am offering myself once again to serve Machakos County as Senator, and I will do so on a Wiper ticket,” stated Kala.
Kala, who is a familiar face in the county’s political circles, expressed confidence in his ability to deliver and represent the interests of the Machakos people in the Senate. He pointed to his years of public service and strong grassroots networks as key strengths that will drive his campaign.
The announcement now sets the stage for what is expected to be a hotly contested race, with several other political heavyweights eyeing the same seat. Among those expected to vie include the incumbent Senator Hon. Agnes Kavindu, who will be seeking re-election; Hon. Dr. Daniel Yumbya, a respected medical professional and former CEO of the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council (KMPDC); seasoned lawyer and former Machakos SenatorialAspirant Wakili Bernard Mung’ata; former Machakos Governor Dr. Alfred Mutua, and Retired Machakos Senior Principal Chief Joshua Kimeu, among others.
Political analysts have noted that the Machakos Senate race is likely to mirror the broader power dynamics within the Ukambani region, particularly within the Wiper Party. With the party’s leader, Kalonzo Musyoka, expected to be a key figure in the national political scene ahead of 2027, the battle for party nominations in Machakos could significantly influence the final outcome.
Hon. Kala’s declaration adds momentum to the race and brings new energy to a contest that is already drawing attention across the region. With Wiper being the dominant party in Machakos, the party primaries are expected to be highly competitive, and could ultimately determine who clinches the seat.
As the 2027 polls draw nearer, the people of Machakos will be watching closely to see how the senatorial race unfolds, and who among the contenders will present the best vision and leadership to represent the county in the Senate.
