Ruto commissions Sh1.4 billion complex at Umma University, launches engineering school expansion

President William Ruto has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening higher education through bold reforms and massive infrastructure investment.

Speaking at Umma University in Kajiado County, the Head of State commissioned the Dr Abdulrahman Al-Sumait Complex, a landmark Sh1.4 billion, 10-storey building designed to accommodate more than 10,000 students. The President described the project as a milestone in Kenya’s journey toward producing skilled, ethical, and innovative graduates.
Dr Ruto also presided over the groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of the Umma University School of Engineering Phase III. He noted that the expansion would play a critical role in equipping young Kenyans with tools to innovate, build, and lead in industries of the future.

The President highlighted reforms already underway in the higher education sector, including the Student-Centred Funding Model, which he said has safeguarded the sustainability of universities, reduced fees, and opened access to more learners across the country.
“These reforms are not only restoring financial stability in our universities, but also ensuring that every deserving Kenyan can pursue higher education and contribute meaningfully to national development,” President Ruto said.
