In a landmark step toward improving water access in Machakos County, Onesmus Kuyu, CECM for Water, Irrigation, Environment, Sanitation, and Climate Change, today officially commissioned the Wamboo Market Borehole in Ekalakala Ward, Masinga Sub-County. The event, held on behalf of H.E. Governor Wavinya Ndeti, was attended by Mr. Lee Chang Ok, Founder and Board President of I Love Africa–South Korea, and Ekalakala MCA, Hon. Stephen Mwanthi.
The borehole project, drilled by the County Department of Water and Irrigation, was fully equipped and connected through a strategic partnership between the Machakos County Government and I Love Africa NGO, providing a sustainable water solution for the local community. The initiative is designed to serve approximately 13,000 residents, with water pipelines extending to Wamboo Dispensary, Wamboo Primary School, Wamboo Secondary School, and other key points within the ward.
During the commissioning, Onesmus Kuyu emphasized the importance of reliable water access in enhancing health, education, and livelihoods.
“Water is life. Today, we are bringing a reliable water source closer to the people of Ekalakala. Our goal is to ensure that every household, every school, and every health facility in Machakos County has access to clean and safe water,” he said.
He further highlighted that the borehole is part of Governor Wavinya Ndeti’s broader agenda to make Machakos a water-secure county, through drilling, equipping, and reticulating boreholes across all wards.
The project is solar-powered, environmentally friendly, and designed for long-term sustainability, featuring:
A 195-metre deep borehole with a yield of 13 cubic metres per hour
A 5.5-kilowatt solar pumping system
A 20,000-litre elevated water storage tank
A 1.2-kilometre water reticulation network
Four water drawing points serving Wamboo Market, the schools, and the health facility.
Mr. Lee Chang Ok praised the successful collaboration between the county and I Love Africa NGO, pointing to the broader impact of international partnerships in delivering meaningful development.
He noted that the Wamboo Market Borehole follows other successful projects, including:
Machakos GK Prison Borehole Water Project (2023)
Nguumo Primary School Borehole Water Project in Kithimani Ward (2024)
Mbembani Level 2 Health Facility Borehole Water Project, set to be commissioned on 9th January 2026
Hon. Stephen Mwanthi, the MCA for Ekalakala Ward, thanked the county government and partners for delivering a transformative project that will directly improve living standards in the community.
For sustainability and professional management, the water facility will be managed by the County Government of Machakos through a registered Water Service Provider, ensuring proper operation, maintenance, and continuity of service.
Community support will also be key, with residents urged to protect the facility and support equitable water distribution.
The commissioning of the Wamboo Market Borehole represents more than infrastructure—it is a promise fulfilled, providing hope, progress, and improved quality of life for the residents of Ekalakala Ward. It also serves as a model for future community-driven and sustainable water projects across Machakos County.
