The leadership of Principal Secretary for the State Department of Aviation and Aerospace Development Teresia Mbaika CBS continues to stand out as a key force behind the transformation of Kenya’s regional aviation infrastructure, with the successful modernization of Ithookwe Airstrip in Kitui County marking yet another major milestone. The project, now in its final stages, reflects the trust President William Ruto placed in PS Mbaika when He tasked Her with spearheading the expansion and modernization of aviation facilities across the country.
Transport infrastructure remains a cornerstone of Kenya’s economic growth, and the upgraded Ithookwe Airstrip is a clear demonstration of how strategic investments in aviation can unlock the potential of underserved regions. Once considered a stalled dream for the people of Kitui, the airstrip has now been transformed into a modern aviation facility that is set to reshape trade, tourism, investment, and emergency response services within the county and beyond.
The project has delivered a newly paved 950-metre asphalt runway, Runway 05/23, approximately 15 metres wide, complete with proper grading, compaction, and high-quality surface finishing that meets aviation standards.
This major improvement ensures safer and more efficient operations for light aircraft and helicopters. The expanded and clearly marked apron further improves aircraft maneuverability, allowing for seamless parking and smooth ground operations.
In addition to the runway, the facility now boasts a modern terminal building complete with a VIP reception area and executive lounges tailored for dignitaries, investors, and business travelers. Supporting infrastructure such as a secure perimeter fence, a bitumen-standard car park, and an internal access driveway further strengthen the functionality and security of the airstrip.
These additions position Ithookwe as more than just an airstrip, but a growing aviation hub capable of serving both public and private sector needs.
The upgraded airstrip is already transforming travel efficiency by reducing flight time between Kitui and major cities such as Nairobi and Mombasa to approximately 35 minutes, a huge improvement compared to the long and often unpredictable road journeys. Strategically located, the facility also serves as a vital link connecting Kitui to Garissa and Wajir, making it a critical part of the region’s transport network and economic corridor.
Beyond convenience, the project is expected to open major opportunities for mining investors, tourists visiting the South Kitui Game Reserve, and healthcare providers requiring emergency medical evacuation services. By attracting regular commercial light-aircraft services, the airstrip will stimulate trade, create jobs, and enhance the county’s visibility as an investment destination. Local residents and leaders have praised both President Ruto and PS Mbaika, saying the successful completion of the project proves that the President’s confidence in her leadership was well placed.
For many in Kitui and the wider Ukambani region, Ithookwe Airstrip represents more than infrastructure—it symbolizes hope, progress, and government commitment to delivering meaningful development.
Under PS Teresia Mbaika’s stewardship, the project has become a powerful example of how visionary leadership and focused execution can transform lives and open new frontiers for regional prosperity.
