NZIOKA WAITA WARNS POLITICIANS AGAINST INTIMIDATING MACHAKOS MCAs, CALLS FOR ASSEMBLY'S INDEPENDENCE

Former Machakos gubernatorial aspirant Nzioka Waita has strongly condemned political interference in the Machakos County Assembly, warning politicians against intimidating MCAs and urging them to respect the Assembly’s independence.

Waita stated that Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) were elected by the people to represent their interests and hold the executive accountable, and their work should not be influenced by external forces.

“The County Assembly is a constitutional institution with a clear mandate. MCAs must be allowed to execute their duties without threats or coercion. Any attempt to control or intimidate them undermines democracy and devolution,” said Waita.

Waita alleged that according to reports he has received, some Machakos MCAs are being subjected to political intimidation, a situation he described as dangerous for good governance. He, however, did not disclose the specific individuals behind the alleged interference.

The former State House Chief of Staff emphasized the importance of an independent County Assembly in ensuring transparency and accountability in governance. He called on all leaders, including those in the executive and political parties, to respect the constitutional role of MCAs.

“I stand in full support of the independence of the Machakos County Assembly. Leaders must allow MCAs to work without unnecessary political pressure,” he added.

His remarks come at a time when concerns have been raised over increasing political meddling in county affairs, with some MCAs allegedly facing pressure to align with certain political interests rather than focusing on their legislative and oversight roles.

Waita’s warning signals growing tensions within Machakos County’s political landscape, as leaders continue to jostle for influence ahead of the next election cycle.
