“We Have Lost Our Way” – Dr.Ezekiel Mutua Decries Police Brutality After Nairobi Shooting

Music Copyright Society of Kenya (MCSK) CEO Dr. Ezekiel Mutua has joined the growing chorus of voices condemning the fatal shooting of a young face mask vendor outside Imenti House on Moi Avenue, Nairobi.

The vendor was reportedly shot dead at close range by a police officer on Tuesday in broad daylight, a move that has triggered national outrage and renewed calls for police accountability.

In a passionate statement posted shortly after the news broke, Dr. Mutua expressed deep concern over the state of leadership and humanity in the country:“

"How can leaders sleep peacefully knowing that someone's son or daughter has lost their life under their authority? What kind of nation have we become when human life holds so little value, and criminals are allowed free rein for others to exploit such tragedies for political gain? We have lost our way as a country. May God have mercy on us all.”

Dr. Mutua’s remarks reflect growing frustration among Kenyans over recurring cases of police brutality and the perceived failure by authorities to rein in rogue officers.

Eyewitnesses at the scene said the vendor posed no threat and was unarmed at the time of the shooting. Videos shared online show panicked crowds and cries for help as the man lay bleeding on the pavement

The incident has become a symbol of the deteriorating trust between civilians and law enforcement in Kenya — a country where ordinary citizens increasingly fear those meant to protect them.

As investigations continue, Dr. Mutua’s words echo the sentiments of many: that Kenya must urgently reflect on its values, its leadership, and the sanctity of human life.
