Yatta Member of Parliament, Hon. Robert Basil, has officially opened the new Mathingau Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Centre in Ikombe Ward, marking a significant milestone in expanding access to technical education in the constituency.
The new institution is a satellite campus of Yatta TVET in Katangi Ward and will officially admit its first group of students on Monday. Admissions have already begun, with learners expected to benefit from bursaries funded through the constituency’s education support programs.
Speaking during the opening ceremony, Hon. Basil emphasized his commitment to making technical education both affordable and practical.
"We are determined to ensure that no child is left behind because of financial challenges. That is why every student who enrolls here will receive bursary support,” the MP said.
The Mathingau TVET will begin by offering two initial programs: Building & Construction and Hairdressing & Beauty Therapy, with plans to introduce more courses as the institution grows.
Hon. Basil further assured parents and trainees that the institution will not only focus on classroom learning but also prioritize industrial attachments.
“Our young people must graduate with skills that match the job market. We will work closely with industries to secure attachments for our students so that they leave here ready to work and succeed,” he affirmed.
The MP also formally welcomed the institution’s newly appointed Principal, Mr. Lukta Taalam, expressing confidence in his leadership.
Parents, community leaders, and education stakeholders present at the event hailed the opening as a bold step in tackling unemployment and youth dependency in Yatta Constituency.
Hon. Basil concluded by urging the community to support the initiative, saying the institution will “transform lives by equipping young people with hands-on skills that guarantee dignity and opportunity.”
