President William Ruto has urged Member States of the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) to invest heavily in digital infrastructure, data governance, and human capacity development to accelerate the region’s digital transformation.
Speaking during the official opening of the 24th COMESA Summit of Heads of State and Government at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) in Nairobi, President Ruto said digitalisation is central to unlocking the region’s full economic potential.
“To transform our common market, we must empower our citizens to thrive in the digital economy,” said President Ruto. “Digital infrastructure, effective data governance, and robust human capacity are the key enablers for a prosperous, inclusive and competitive COMESA.”
He noted that the adoption of digital technologies will optimise resource use, improve energy efficiency, and facilitate the development of modern smart electrical grids. Beyond energy, President Ruto said digitalisation will enhance cross-border trade efficiency, streamline logistics, strengthen financial inclusion, and create platforms for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to access regional and global markets.
“These advances will translate into more jobs, increased opportunities, and greater competitiveness for our people,” he added.
The Summit, attended by several regional leaders, brought together key figures including Presidents Évariste Ndayishimiye of Burundi, Azali Assoumani of Comoros (outgoing COMESA Chair), and Emmerson Mnangagwa of Zimbabwe. Prime Ministers Ahmed Abiy of Ethiopia, Russell Mmiso Dlamini of Eswatini, and Mustafa Madbouly of Egypt were also present.
Other dignitaries in attendance included African Union Commission Chair Mahmoud Youssouf, COMESA Secretary-General Chileshe Mpundu Kapwepwe, and African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Secretary-General Wamkele Mene.
President Ruto emphasised that COMESA’s future growth depends on cooperation and shared commitment to digital transformation as the foundation for sustainable development and regional integration.
