UTS SACCO CHARTS BOLD FUTURE WITH AI, RECORDS STRONG FINANCIAL GROWTH & LAUNCHES WOMEN EMPOWERMENT FUND.

Universal Traders SACCO (UTS) has announced remarkable financial growth, strategic reforms, and the launch of new digital and empowerment initiatives aimed at strengthening member welfare and institutional sustainability. The announcements were made during the 7th Special Delegates Meeting (SDM) held on September 26, 2025, at Lysak Haven Park in Machakos, under the leadership of Board Chairman CPA CS Julius N. Mwengei and Chief Executive Officer Mr. Dominic Mutunga.

Chairman Mwengei commended delegates for their continued commitment and discipline, acknowledging their crucial role in steering the SACCO’s success despite economic headwinds affecting Kenya’s cooperative sector. He revealed that UTS Sacco had reduced its external borrowing from Ksh164 million in August 2024 to just Ksh3 million by September 2025, a major milestone that demonstrates prudent financial management and strategic restructuring. The remaining balance, he assured, would be cleared by the end of October 2025 — freeing up resources to support member-focused initiatives.
To cushion members against rising credit costs, the SACCO’s Board approved a review of loan interest rates, lowering them across all credit products. Mwengei noted that this decision aligns with market trends and member feedback, making SACCO loans more affordable and competitive. At the same time, UTS raised interest rates on Fixed and Call Deposit Accounts to reward loyal savers and encourage a stronger savings culture among members.

A key highlight of the SDM was the launch of a Women Empowerment Fund, a dedicated facility designed to promote gender inclusion and economic participation among women. The fund will offer favorable lending terms and access to training for women entrepreneurs, traders, and professionals, empowering them to expand their businesses and achieve financial independence. Mwengei emphasized that the initiative is part of UTS’s broader financial inclusion strategy, focused on building equity and opportunity for all members.
In his remarks, UTS CEO Mr. Dominic Mutunga outlined the SACCO’s ongoing digital transformation journey, highlighting plans to leverage Artificial Intelligence (AI) and automation to enhance operational efficiency. He disclosed that UTS is exploring the use of AI-powered chatbots to handle member inquiries, AI-driven loan appraisal systems, and predictive analytics for credit scoring and risk assessment. These innovations, Mutunga said, are designed to streamline service delivery while ensuring accuracy, transparency, and faster turnaround times.

The leadership assured members that as UTS embraces technology, it remains committed to responsible and ethical innovation. Chairman Mwengei stressed that AI adoption will be guided by transparency, fairness, and strict compliance with Kenya’s Data Protection Act. To strengthen digital security, the SACCO has already rolled out cybersecurity audits, appointed a Data Protection Officer, and developed a comprehensive privacy policy. Regular ICT staff training and a soon-to-be-launched cyber insurance policy are part of the SACCO’s proactive defense against emerging cyber threats.

UTS Sacco also reaffirmed its commitment to Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles as a core part of its business model. Mwengei announced that ESG considerations are being integrated into lending policies to promote eco-friendly investments, social inclusion, and ethical governance. These initiatives include supporting green energy projects, community empowerment programs, and sustainable agribusiness ventures, positioning UTS as one of Kenya’s most socially responsible financial cooperatives.

Despite the broader economic challenges, UTS has demonstrated strong liquidity and profitability, maintaining low loan default rates and stable growth. The Sacco’s financial performance has been lauded within the cooperative sector, with consistent dividend payouts and improved member confidence. Members can expect higher returns and enhanced services as the institution continues to strengthen its balance sheet through innovation and efficient management.

During the SDM, Guest Speaker Mr. Joe Wisdom commended the SACCO’s leadership for its transformative agenda and foresight. He noted that UTS Sacco’s adoption of AI, commitment to ESG standards, and investment in women’s empowerment showcase a forward-thinking cooperative ready to thrive in the digital era. “UTS is not just adapting to change — it is leading it. The Sacco stands as a model of resilience, innovation, and inclusivity in Kenya’s financial cooperative movement,” he said.

In his closing remarks, Chairman Mwengei reaffirmed UTS’s long-term strategy, focusing on ICT modernization, ESG integration, data protection compliance, and member education. He urged delegates to remain united in driving reforms that will propel the SACCO to greater heights. “Together, we are building a resilient, transparent, and member-focused SACCO that stands as a model of cooperative excellence,” he concluded.
