Governor Wavinya Ndeti of Machakos County today launched the Agripreneur Extension Model at the Kasinga Farmers’ Cooperative Society Grounds, a major step towards modernizing agriculture and empowering local farmers. The launch coincided with the distribution of grants to cooperative societies and newly formed farmers’ SACCOs, under the Chakula Mezani, Pesa Mfukoni initiative.
Addressing a gathering of farmers, youth agripreneurs, and county officials, Governor Wavinya Ndeti emphasized the pivotal role of agriculture as the backbone of the county’s economy. She noted that agriculture not only sustains livelihoods but also enhances food security, drives economic growth, and forms the foundation of household income.
“Supporting our farmers is crucial for building a prosperous county. By empowering them with modern tools, training, and market access, we can ensure sustainable growth, improve livelihoods, and strengthen food security,” Governor Wavinya Ndeti said.
The Agripreneur Extension Model is a youth-driven, technology-enabled program that deploys 170 trained agripreneurs to provide farmers with critical support services. These include agricultural training, data digitization, input facilitation, and market linkages. The program aims to bridge the gap between farmers and modern agricultural practices, fostering efficiency, productivity, and profitability.
In addition to the Agripreneur Extension Model, the Governor highlighted the county’s ongoing efforts to improve livestock health through regular vaccination campaigns, strengthen agricultural extension services, and modernize key sectors such as coffee production.
“By integrating technology, youth participation, and structured support, we are not only transforming farming practices but also creating income-generating opportunities for young people. Agriculture is no longer just a livelihood; it is a viable business,” she said.
The grants issued today will support cooperative societies and newly formed farmers’ SACCOs in acquiring inputs, upgrading equipment, and expanding their operational capacity. These initiatives are expected to enhance production efficiency and improve the overall quality of farm produce in the county.
County officials, farmers, and youth agripreneurs expressed optimism that the new model will revolutionize the agricultural landscape in Machakos. The program aligns with the Governor’s broader agenda of promoting youth empowerment, food security, and sustainable agricultural development.
Governor Ndeti concluded by urging all stakeholders, including farmers, youth, and cooperative societies, to actively participate in the program, embrace modern farming practices, and leverage technology for improved agricultural productivity.
