DG Francis Mwangangi Signals Possible 2027 Gubernatorial Bid as Machakos Political Rift Widens

Machakos County’s political landscape is once again under the spotlight following fresh indications of a deepening rift between Governor Wavinya Ndeti and her deputy, Francis Mwangangi, raising early questions about the 2027 succession matrix.

Deputy Governor Mwangangi has openly hinted at the possibility of seeking the Machakos governorship in the next general election, a move that would place him in direct competition with his current boss.

Speaking during a media interview, Mwangangi suggested that persistent differences within the county’s top leadership could compel him to chart his own political path, signalling what many observers view as an early declaration of intent.
While stopping short of making a formal announcement, the deputy governor’s remarks have been widely interpreted as confirmation that relations between the two leaders remain strained, despite previous attempts to downplay internal disagreements.

Political analysts note that such public signalling often marks the beginning of open realignment ahead of an election cycle.

At the same time, Governor Wavinya Ndeti’s recent public appearances have added another layer to the unfolding political narrative. The governor has increasingly been seen alongside former Yatta MP Charles Kilonzo, particularly during development tours and public engagements in the lower parts of Machakos County.

The consistent pairing has fueled speculation that Kilonzo could be positioning himself as a potential running mate should Governor Ndeti seek re-election in 2027.

Although neither Governor Ndeti nor Charles Kilonzo has publicly addressed the speculation, their visible camaraderie has not gone unnoticed within local political circles. Supporters and critics alike are reading the signs as an indication of early coalition-building, a common feature of Machakos politics as leaders seek to consolidate regional and voter bloc support.

The unfolding developments point to growing political realignments within Machakos County, with the governor, her deputy, and key political figures already positioning themselves for the post-2027 order. As the election season draws closer, observers expect sharper political messaging, shifting alliances, and increased public engagements as leaders test the ground and rally support.

For now, Machakos residents are watching closely as what appears to be an internal county leadership fallout steadily transforms into an early contest for the county’s top seat.
