Taking to social media, Babu Owino accused Tanzanian authorities of mistreating Kenyans and termed the detention of Karua as “demeaning, unnecessary, and a violation of rights.” The vocal legislator did not mince his words as he directly addressed Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu.
“President Samia Suluhu, it’s very worrying to mistreat Kenyans when they come to Tanzania. Detaining Her Excellency Martha Karua at Julius Nyerere international airport is demeaning, unnecessary and amounts to violation of rights. Don’t ever come to Kenya if you can’t behave. We will not entertain such conduct unbecoming of a Leader,” Babu Owino said.
Details surrounding the circumstances of Ms. Karua’s reported detention remain scanty, but the incident has sparked diplomatic concerns and raised questions on the treatment of regional leaders and citizens across East African Community (EAC) member states.
Martha Karua, a prominent lawyer and former running mate to Raila Odinga in the 2022 general elections, is known for her unwavering stance on governance and rule of law. Neither the Tanzanian government nor Karua herself had officially commented on the incident at the time of this report
