YATTA MP ROBERT BASIL CONDEMNS POLICE BRUTALITY, VISITS INJURED PROTESTERS AT MATUU LEVEL 4 HOSPITAL

Yatta Member of Parliament Hon. Robert Basil has come out strongly against the excessive use of force by police during the recent anti-government protests that rocked various parts of the country. Speaking after visiting victims admitted at Matuu Level 4 Hospital, Hon. Basil expressed deep concern over the violent crackdown on demonstrators and called for accountability among law enforcement agencies.

The MP found several young men and women nursing injuries sustained during clashes with police, including cases of rubber bullet wounds and blunt force trauma. He took time to interact with the victims and their families, assuring them of his support and commitment to justice.

“I am deeply saddened by what I have witnessed today. These are our brothers and sisters who were exercising their democratic rights, only to be met with violence. It is unacceptable. I extend my heartfelt sympathies and wish each of them a full and speedy recovery,” he said.

Hon. Basil noted that while security is important, police must conduct their duties within the bounds of the law. “The duty of the police is to protect lives and property, not to harm the very citizens they are supposed to serve. We must put an end to this brutality,” he said firmly.

The legislator also urged residents of Yatta, especially the youth, to remain peaceful and not to give in to provocation. He emphasized that the growth of the constituency depends on calm, unity, and responsible engagement.

“I urge our young people to channel their anger into constructive dialogue. Let us not destroy what we have built. Through unity and peace, Yatta will continue to grow, and our businesses will flourish. Let’s safeguard our future by choosing peace over violence,” he added.

Hon. Basil called on both the national government and human rights institutions to investigate the incidents and ensure justice is served. He reiterated his commitment to defending the rights of Yatta residents and creating a safe, inclusive environment for all.
