Former Nairobi Governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko has reiterated his commitment to reward the national football team, Harambee Stars, with Ksh 400 million if they clinch the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) trophy.
Sonko dismissed speculation that he would be unable to raise such an amount, insisting that he has always fulfilled his pledges to the team throughout his political career — from his days as MP, to Senator, Governor, and now as a private citizen.
“If Harambee Stars bring the trophy home, they will walk away with a total of Ksh 1 billion — Ksh 600 million from President William Ruto and Ksh 400 million from me,” he said.
The former governor acknowledged that reneging on such a promise would be politically damaging, and assured Kenyans that he was prepared to deliver on his word.
He also rallied Kenyans to put politics aside and rally behind the team. “Let us forget about one-term or two-term debates and focus on supporting our national flag bearers. Politics is like rain — it comes and goes,” Sonko remarked.
The Harambee Stars are gearing up for the CHAN tournament with hopes of making history, and Sonko’s bold pledge has added to the anticipation.
