Principal Secretary Teresia Mbaika, will tomorrow lead a major tree planting and clean-up drive at Muthini Primary School in Kaiti, Makueni County as part of this year’s Mazingira Day celebrations.
The event will bring together pupils, teachers, local leaders, and residents in a collective effort to restore the environment and promote sustainable practices. PS Mbaika said the exercise symbolizes the government’s continued commitment to environmental conservation and community-led climate action.
“The more trees we plant, the better the world becomes. I call on all Kenyans to come out tomorrow, plant many trees, and make our spaces green. Let’s create a forest in every school and homestead. Our environment is our shared responsibility, so let’s clean it and green it,” she urged.
Mazingira Day, championed by President Dr. William Samoei Ruto, is a national call to action for all citizens to engage in environmental restoration efforts. It supports the government’s ambitious target of achieving 30 percent national tree cover by 2032.
This year, the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Forestry has dedicated the celebrations to a fruit tree planting and clean-up campaign across the country. The initiative seeks to deepen environmental stewardship, restore degraded ecosystems, and promote sustainable livelihoods through fruit tree cultivation.
PS Mbaika’s leadership in the Makueni event highlights the government’s ongoing efforts to empower local communities to take active roles in environmental management and contribute meaningfully to Kenya’s climate resilience agenda.
