Yatta Member of Parliament Hon. Robert Ngui Basil has been ranked the best-performing legislator in Machakos County, according to a new constituency performance survey that highlights steady progress in service delivery and grassroots development.
The survey, released on January 27, 2026 by Kenya Track Survey, places Basil at the top with a 72 per cent public approval rating, the highest among MPs from the county’s eight constituencies.
The findings show that residents increasingly evaluate their elected leaders based on tangible constituency-level outcomes, with education infrastructure, water access, youth empowerment programmes, social welfare initiatives, and effective utilisation of the National Government Constituencies Development Fund (NG-CDF) emerging as key performance indicators.
Conducted between January 2 and January 23, 2026, the study sampled 4,879 respondents from both rural and urban settings across Machakos County. Data was collected through randomised telephonic interviews among adults aged 18 years and above.
Water Security and Drought Mitigation Drive Basil’s Lead
Respondents in Yatta Constituency overwhelmingly credited MP Basil for his sustained focus on water security and drought resilience, areas that have long challenged the semi-arid region.
The survey highlights the construction of earth dams across multiple wards, significantly improving access to water for households, livestock, and small-scale irrigation. Basil’s continued advocacy for the Yatta Mega Dam was also cited as a strategic long-term intervention expected to enhance irrigation, boost food security, and stabilise livelihoods.
Residents described his leadership as consistent, development-oriented, and responsive to local needs, earning him strong public trust and setting him apart from his peers.
While Basil led the rankings, the survey indicates that other MPs from Machakos County also recorded favourable public assessments.
Kangundo MP Fabian Kyule Muli scored 64 per cent, with respondents noting efforts to revive stalled NG-CDF projects, expand bursary support, and advocate for water solutions in drought-affected areas.
Masinga MP Joshua Mbithi Mutua followed at 62 per cent, largely attributed to classroom construction, sanitation improvements, and expanded water access.
Mavoko MP Patrick Makau King’ola recorded a 60 per cent approval rating, with residents associating his performance with industrial advocacy, transport infrastructure, urban service delivery, and labour welfare in the county’s main industrial zone.
Results-Focused Leadership Gains Public Approval
Overall, the survey underscores a growing preference among Machakos residents for results-driven leadership, with visible development outcomes outweighing national political rhetoric in shaping public opinion.
With his commanding lead, MP Hon. Robert Ngui Basil emerges as the standout performer in the survey, reflecting strong public endorsement of his development agenda in Yatta Constituency.
