Hon. Mwengi Mutuse, OGW, MP for Kibwezi West, has welcomed the High Court ruling upholding the impeachment of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, describing the decision as a vindication of Parliament’s actions.
Mutuse, who moved the impeachment motion against Gachagua, congratulated the three-judge bench for what he termed as a comprehensive clarification of the law surrounding impeachment proceedings in Kenya.
The legislator said the ruling now opens a wider national debate on the legal and political implications of impeachment, particularly whether impeached leaders should continue participating actively in politics and governance.
According to Mutuse, leaders removed from office through impeachment should not continue enjoying unrestricted political influence, including campaigning for candidates, engaging in political party affairs, or shaping governance matters.
He argued that impeachment should carry meaningful consequences and called for legislative reforms to address what he described as existing gaps in the law.
Mutuse further urged lawmakers to strengthen accountability measures to preserve public trust in leadership and constitutional offices.
